The Music Industries' Fear of Free Downloads

Throughout history music was made to be passed down from generation to generation, it was only in the last 200 years or so that it has been seen as a product.  And, throughout those 200 or so years, greedy men have tried to gain control over and get rich off of other peoples' creations.  Today, people download music for free because they feel that it isn't worth paying for...and I don't disagree.  Read more after the jump...
As an artist I understand the need to provide for one's self and one's family, but many respected and successful artists are now broke despite their creative efforts.  If artists released music for free, people may regain interest in artists and the music industry again.  I hear you...I know.  Just like any other company, you have to learn how to ride the wave.  Work on new ways to advertise and merchandise.  Come up with cheaper ways to make videos and record albums.  If fat cats quit getting their food, they soon have to tighten the belt.  Which may mean better deals, fair contracts, and artists keeping control of their creative processes.  It is simple supply and demand and when your market is flooded, it's time to push the dead weight over-board.  That means you Big Labels.
